Awl-fruited sedge grows in wet woods, swamps, marshes, floodplain forests, and at wetland margins. It seems to tolerate a variety of soil types from black organic soil, sedge peat, muck, to moist mineral soil. It forms clumps with fairly long, wide leaves. The stems are distinctly triangular, and each has a dense seed head at the top.
